#07 Notes On Nationalism (George Orwell)

I DNF-ed this at 44 out of 59.

I won’t say I willingly DNF-ed it. It’s just. I was in the middle of the essay which I wasn’t able to follow when I put it down and I just have no motivation to complete it.

The first essay is Notes On Nationalism. It defines nationalism and distinguishes it from patriotism which I think is a valid notion. And he talks about the idea of nationalism being an obsession.

The nationalist not only does not disapprove of the atrocities committed by his own side, but he has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them.

The second essay is on Antisemitism in Britain. This one is quite sad actually because it mentions how people don’t view their dislike as racist opinions. I tried to reflect on the Singapore society with the message he was trying to send but things in Singapore are not on a surface level as terrible as the situation was in Britain after the World War II. Hence, I found it hard to connect.

I did not read the third one The Sporting Spirit.

I do think the first essay is worth a read though. Just get it. It’s 1 pound. 4.50 SGD though in Book depo when I bought it.
